the mine

The Passage (Justin Cronin Edition)

The mine is a concealed old copper mine in the hills whose discovery turns a prolonged search for a viral nest into an immediate military crisis. Its exposed shaft offers a route into the creatures’ underground refuge, but locating it also leaves Blue Squad under threat and prompts a plan to attack the nest before the garrison evacuates.

Location and Discovery

The entrance shaft had been sought throughout the summer by the soldiers under Vorhees. They suspected the mine was one of the viral hot spots: a place where the creatures slept. Using old geological survey maps and tracking viral movements with nets, they narrowed the search to a roughly twenty-square-kilometer area in the southeast quadrant above the river. Blue Squad was sent to make one final attempt before the evacuation.

The squad found the mine by chance shortly before sundown. The concealed entrance appeared as a shallow depression in the earth; the point man disappeared into it, alerting the others to the opening. The first viral to emerge killed two more soldiers before anyone could fire. The rest of the squad formed a firing line, but the shaft continued to release creatures, and the unit faced the prospect of being overwhelmed after dark.

The Threat and the Battle Plan

The failing daylight made the discovery urgent. Flares could delay the creatures only briefly, so the squad split: one group would try to escape while the other, led by Lieutenant Raimey, covered its retreat. The plan depended on holding the approach until the first group got away; once night fell and the flares were spent, the defenders expected to be overcome. The mine was therefore not simply a newly identified location but a danger whose tactical importance came from the short window in which it could be approached or attacked.

The reported discovery changed the garrison’s posture. After days of waiting and small missions in the forest, Vorhees’s men prepared for battle through the night. Their proposed attack used explosives, diesel fuel, ammonium nitrate, and a grenade-cluster igniter known as a flusher, lowered by winch into the exposed shaft. The blast was expected to kill many of the virals underground, but the soldiers did not know where any survivors might emerge. A century of geological change could have opened another route, so other squads were assigned to search for additional openings while the explosives were placed.

Consequences and Significance

By gray dawn, the vehicles were loaded and the soldiers assembled at the gate, with all but one squad preparing to leave the garrison. Alicia, who had led the surviving members of Blue Squad back by the route along the river, stood with Vorhees over a map spread across a Humvee’s hood. The mine’s discovery had thus become the immediate context for a larger expedition: the troops were moving from searching and waiting toward a coordinated attack, while Peter, watching their preparations and Alicia among them, decided he wanted to join the war.

The mine’s concealed shaft concentrates the novel’s recurring problem of infrastructure and uncertainty. Survey maps, nets, vehicles, and explosives make a military response possible, but none can establish whether the underground refuge has other exits or predict where surviving virals will surface. The location’s discovery provides a target without providing control over what lies beyond it.
